TOPPAN Security Selected to Design & Manufacture Guyana’s New ePassport
Georgetown, Guyana, August 07, 2025 — The Co-operative Republic of Guyana is taking a significant step towards digital transformation by modernizing its immigration services and implementing a next-generation ePassport infrastructure. This initiative demonstrates the country’s commitment to innovation and enhanced efficiency in its services.
Guyana has contracted Novo Technology, alongside its partner TOPPAN Security, a global leader in secure identity solutions and the acquirer of the citizen identity business of HID earlier this year, to jointly design and manufacture Guyana’s new ePassport.
This initiative represents a significant advancement in national security and citizen services, marking a pivotal step in Guyana’s identity journey as it evolves from a machine-readable passport (MRP) to an electronic passport powered by TOPPAN Security’s advanced chip operating system, SOMA.
“The introduction of the new ePassport signifies a monumental leap forward for Guyana’s technological landscape,” stated Glen Ramdhani, Executive Chairman of Novo Technology.“By harnessing innovative technology, Guyana is not only enhancing the security of its travel documents but is also making impressive strides in world-class border management systems with eGates technology at its main airport. This government initiative is a clear investment in improving the lives of its citizens through innovation and the digitization of services.”
TOPPAN Security’s award-winning design team, together with Novo, worked closely with Guyana’s Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Data Management Authority to define both the aesthetic and security features of the new passport. This collaboration draws on their global experience delivering secure identity solutions to various countries, including Estonia, Bahrain, Malta, Tanzania, Ireland, and Argentina.
The new ePassport will securely store both biometric and biographic data for citizens of Guyana, bolstering national security and building global trust in the country’s travel documents. This implementation positions Guyana to join the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Public Key Directory (PKD), a network of 180 countries that can share and access traveler data stored on passport chips.
Membership in the ICAO PKD will streamline visa applications for Guyanese citizens, grant access to automated border control systems such as eGates, and streamline immigration procedures, making travel safer and more convenient for all citizens.
“We are proud to support this forward-looking project by delivering a secure, high-integrity ePassport solution for the people of Guyana, reinforcing the country’s modernization efforts and enhancing its stature on the global stage,” remarked Jean-Pierre Ting, President of TOPPAN Security.
