Ethiopia Unveils Its First Electronic Passport, Marking a New Era in Secure Travel Documentation

Addis Ababa. Ethiopia – February 21. 2025- Ethiopia has officially launched its first electronic passport (E-passport) in a landmark event held at the Science Museum. The initiative. spearheaded by Immigration and Citizenship Services (ICS), Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH), and TOPPAN Security Ethiopia S.C., represents a major step forward in modernizing the country’s travel documentation system.

The E-passport launch ceremony, attended by H.E. President Taye Atske Selassie, featured the presentation of the first copies of the new passport to Ethiopia’s leadership. Senior government officials, diplomats. and international partners gathered to celebrate this milestone in national security, digital transformation, and service efficiency.

A Leap Forward in Passport Security and Efficiency

The new E-passport integrates biometric technology, advanced encryption, and tamper­proof materials. ensuring compliance with international standards and significantly enhancing security. Alongside the passport itself. ICS has deployed modernized passport issuance systems to streamline application processes and improve service delivery for Ethiopian citizens.

Selamawit Dawit, CEO of Immigration and Citizenship Services, underscored the impact on immigration and national security:

The introduction of the E-passport is a game-changer for Ethiopia’s immigration services. With improved security. faster processing. and internationally recognized standards. this passport will significantly enhance the travel experience for Ethiopians while strengthening our global recognition and border control.

Expansion of Digital Immigration Services

In addition to the E-passport launch, Immigration and Citizenship Services (ICS) is introducing a comprehensive digital transformation to enhance immigration services.

Starting February 24, 2025, ICS will begin offering:

  • Visa, ID, and permit services to the public
  • Modernized registration and issuance systems, significantly reducing processing times
  • Enhanced security measures to prevent fraud and identity theft

Additionally, ICS will provide further updates on:

  • Visa services at Bole International Airport
  • Company registration processes

The rollout of E-passport services for the general public will be announced separately in the coming weeks.

This initiative reflects Ethiopia’s broader commitment to leveraging secure digital solutions to enhance efficiency, accessibility, and national security.

A New Chapter for Ethiopia’s Travel and Security Infrastructure

The launch event featured an exhibition detailing the transition from the Machine-Readable Passport (MRP) to the new E-passport, allowing attendees to explore its enhanced security features and the future of Ethiopia’s passport services.

As part of this transition, ICS will conduct a nationwide awareness campaign, ensuring a seamless adoption process and guiding citizens through the application and issuance procedures.

With this milestone, Ethiopia takes a significant step forward in modernizing its immigration infrastructure, strengthening national security, and ensuring a more seamless, efficient, and secure experience for travellers.
